A Girl No More: Basic Tips on How to Throw Your 18th Birthday Party

          In the historic days, a young lady belonging to an titled or upper class family, upon reaching the age of adulthood, was introduced to society through a formal banquet . The event was known as her "debut". The intention of the celebration was to expose the young woman to suitable bachelors and their families, with the hope of future marriage with one of these bachelors in the upper class circle.

         The custom continued and was adopted by a variety of regions and later by other countries. Then, generation after generation, the celebration evolved and was tailored according to the norms, customs and traditions of the society that adopted it.

         Although  debut in the Philippines are not exactly based on the purposes like that of the olden days,  Filipina women regard their debut as one of the most important milestones of their lives. Not throwing a lavish party upon reaching the age of eighteen creates a vacuum in a lady's life cycle.

          The 18th birthday party celebration is definitely not like any other simple birthday celebration with party streamers and  balloons of different colors scattered all over the  venue. This one includes a lot of planning, preparations, and headaches.  So  if you are planning to throw a debut party any time soon, here are some  basic tips which may help you get a step ahead of the stressful planning.


1. VENUE


          Book a venue for the debut. Take into consideration how many people need to be accommodated. Scout out locations in and out of town until you find just the place that suits your personality.







2. MOTIF

          Motif is usually reduced to the color that will dominantly be used in the party. But really, motif is more than just that.
          When choosing your motif, you may consider your favorite color, which is the conventional way of doing it, but to make your party much more interesting to become a real event to remember, you might want to think of a whole theme, rather than just a color.
          A theme is a guide to what the most of your party will be about. It may range from something romantic like renaissance to something more magical like fairy tales. It’s all a matter of imagination and creativity, and of course, personality, that motif, which you think is you.
          Once you have set your motif, everything else becomes easy.




3. INVITES

           Still sticking to your motif, choose the invitation that is simple, elegant, and proper for the occasion. Do not rely on electronic invites such as the Email. If you are confident however that your guests check their email regularly, you may do so, just be sure to get a confirmation by calling them to ask if the invitation was received. However, a hard copy of your invitation is still the best way to invite people. After all, this is also where you can showcase your own creativity!
         Carefully prepare the list of names included in your program. Make sure names are not misspelled. And be sure the people included in your program know what to do. Send your invitations at least two weeks before the event itself.

4. PROGRAM AND ENTERTAINMENT

          The program of your party is important in keeping your guests entertained. Remember, it is your party. You’re the star! But you are also the hostess, you have the responsibility to make the night as enjoyable for them as it is for you.
           Most often, the right performers, and emcee do it all. To entertain your guests, you can abuse your talented friends into making them sing your favorite song for instance. In this way, you are giving an opportunity for them to showcase their talents. Parts like the Cotillion de Honor require a great deal of preparation however. It may take months of preparation before you can produce a perfect Cotillion de Honor.
          It would also make your event more interesting, if you include special segments, or the “not usual” segments. But always take note of your theme.




5. ATTIRE

           Select the dress of your dreams. No matter how many shops you have to visit or designers you must meet with, ensure that you select the dress that makes you feel like a princess. Dresses for an 18th debut often are white or pale in color. Scour magazines, websites and shops to locate a dress that flatters your figure and coloring. Take along a friend or family member to gain a second opinion as to the style and suitability of your dress.
         Attend to the details of your appearance such as your hair, makeup and accessories. Meet with a stylist well in advance to discuss a look for your debut. Bring a photo of your gown to give your stylist an idea of the look you want to achieve. Hire a makeup artist to do your face for the day. Purchase jewelry that compliments your dress, makeup and hairstyle. Remember that less is more and leave the bling at home.




  The debutant herself must take charge of everything that must be settled. Her choice must be the one that should be counted because it’s her birthday, after all.  Another thing is that to not take preparation as a joke. Being prepared save the organizers from too much stress and cramming

       No matter how grandeur or typical the party is, never forget that what matters most is the enjoyment the party brought to the debutante as well as to the guests because a debutante ball is a tradition that must be cherished forever.
